I found a recording today on YouTube of Sogno di Volare – ‘The Dream of Flight’, the main theme from Civilization VI – by Christopher Tin. This version is performed at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod by the Celebration Choir and the Welsh National Opera Orchestra.
I love this performance. There’s something that’s always appealed to me about orchestras and choirs performing music from, say, TV shows or, as in this case, a video game. I’ve always had a soft spot for music from soundtracks, and especially from games, some of whose music genuinely can touch on the magnificent. TV music can sometimes fare slightly better; but music from games can be a little bit overlooked as real art. It’s good to see the work being brought out into a more formal setting like this.
I’m singling this particular video out only because YouTube lined it up for me, and because I’m kind of into this piece at the moment. I should point out there are lots of comparable videos of other game music suites (“Other orchestras are available”); and I’d appreciate them all similarly. I liked that all these skilled people got together and put their all into performing this music, giving it the same care and respect they’d give to something by Mozart or Mendelssohn. Or Motorhead*.
(* Sorry. But I couldn’t let a good Red Dwarf reference go by, could I?)
